Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other

In Closing

  • We don’t need to keep computers busy, they keep us busy as our work bleeds into our private lives. Technology gives us more and more of what we want and it seems we want to be always in touch and never alone. We lack refreshing solitude and become lonely. Loneliness is failed solitude.
  • We have to find a way to live with seductive technology and make it work for our purposes. Simple love of technology is not helpful, nor is a luddite impulse. Because we have grown up with the Net, we assume the Net is grown up. We are still in the early days. There is time to make corrections. We don’t need to reject or disparage technology, we need to put it in its place. We deserve better and we shall have it.
