Butterflies and Teens Need to Struggle
- A man saw a butterfly struggling to get out of its cocoon. He cut the cocoon with his knife and freed the butterfly, which flapped its wings weakly, then collapsed and died. I biologist later told him he did the worst thing for the butterfly as it need the struggle to develop muscles to fly. Abbott uses this allegory to explain how children need to struggle through adolescence to develop strength for adult life.
