Should Educators Talk of The Bar or Your Bar?

  • How cool would it be if each student set their own bar, perhaps with some advice from the teacher? Why this doesn’t happen may depend on what’s easy for the adults rather than what’s good for the students. What could be easier than giving all students the same test at the same time? Teachers do this even when they aren’t giving standardized tests. I recall teachers using the term test and rest day to describe the days where all of their classes took period-long tests. It is also easy to tell students who don’t pass to take the entire course or the entire school year all over again rather than to come up with a way for students to finish the requirements of a course or grade. Repeating a course or a grade is folly as the students get to repeat the parts they already know while they could be learning something new.
