A New Frontier

• The idea of The App Store has already been picked up by Google and Microsoft for their cellphone operating systems. Any piece of hardware with a screen can be enhanced and future-proofed with new apps. TV makers are beginning to ship TV sets with Internet access and app stores. Ford is planning web-enabled cars equipped with screens and app store access. Game console makers all have online game stores. Tablets lead by the iPad are in the app store business as is the Apple computer operating system. The new upgrade to OS X (Lion) is already being sold in the Mac app store. Google and Microsoft are doing the same thing for the Chrome OS and Windows 8. Software can be almost anything. It’s almost magic.
