Growing Up Global: Raising Children to Be At Home in the World – Book Summary

What They Believe

  • Any study of other cultures will soon run into religion. Homa notes that the religions of the world generally share the values that most parents would like their children to learn. Its also important the children learn how religion has been corrupted for evil purposes. (The Holocaust and radicle Muslim Terror for example). While the US is free from the tyranny of a single religion thanks to our founding fathers, other nations are ruled by a single religion. One way to understand other religions is to read their stories and Homa provides some. You can also study religious art. Asking others about their religion can help, and you can attend services at other houses of worship. Before you go, however, do some homework so you understand what to wear and how to behave. Homa suggests that you create a sacred space in your home. (Doug: There is no mention of what to do for parents who have no religion, but I think all children should have some understanding of the world’s religions.)
