Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin

The Resistance

  • We often find the dreams of art shattered by resistance. Getting something done has two main challenges. Thrashing involves making changes in a project after you start. They can be minor tweaks or major surgery. Amateurs tend to thrash late while pros do it early. The other challenge is coordination. As a team increases in size, the number of possible interactions increases exponentially. That’s why start-ups often get to market faster than big companies. They also have more linchpins per square foot to help. You need a single person in charge and limit the number of people who are allowed to thrash.
  • Part of resistance is feeling comfortable. Your lizard brain, the biological underpinning of resistance, constantly seeks comfort. Linchpins are willing to get outside of their comfort zone. Discomfort brings engagement and change. Uncomfortable actions can lead to success. Be comfortable enough to have bad ideas. If you have enough bad ideas, good ones will slip through.
