The World Is Open – Curtis Bonk

5. Learning Object Repositories & Portals

  • Countless repositories exist on the Web. They vary in quality, may allow interaction or addition, and are funded by governments, businesses, and individuals. Finding what you need can be complex and confusing, and judging quality requires a new set of learning skills. Learning is now expanded beyond privileged elites. The cost of textbooks is on its way from $4 billion to maybe $0. Teachers can get materials for those who need extra challenge and extra help. The best teachers now have a global classroom. Texts can contain videos and podcasts. Historic events can be viewed while they happen. Check out Encyclopedia of Life, Museum of Online Museums, Exploring and Collecting History Online, Connexions, Public Library of Science, and Curriki, which is a curriculum wiki.
