Disappearing Recess Implications – Ben Hirshberg

Benefit for the Teachers

  • Recess can make a teacher’s job easier and more pleasant; which in turn helps children learn. Specifically, recess can help teachers manage the classroom more effectively. This is because teachers are able to get to know their students better while monitoring them on the playground. Teachers being more familiar with their students can serve two purposes. First, the teacher is able to make curriculum more relevant to students after if they are able to learn some of their interests on the playground. Second, teachers are given an opportunity to pick up on any bullying and then rectify the conflict, which is important because bullying is often missed or overlooked in the classroom. There is also benefit of giving teachers a rest. Teaching can be exhausting, and recess gives teachers an important break and change of pace from the monotony of the classroom so they can be energized and ready to teach after recess ends. Recess is beneficial for more than just outward behavior; as physical play has been shown to be of benefit to the hardwiring of humans.
