Disappearing Recess Implications – Ben Hirshberg

Recess in the Curriculum

  • Recess is not widely required to be in the curriculum of elementary schools. Only eleven percent of states and fifty seven percent of school districts require elementary schools to provide students with regularly scheduled recess. This means that in forty three percent of school districts, the decision to include recess in the curriculum is up to the individual school. This decision that individual schools have can often be influenced by outside pressures, such as the pressure to perform well on standardized tests.
