Help Kids Choose a Major – Guest Post

Be Flexible

  • We all know how teenagers can be, and if you become too pushy with them, they are going to begin pushing back. When you are trying to force a major upon them, they might completely rebel and refuse to choose a major at all. Remember, selecting a major is something you cannot do for them. As much as you might want them to pursue a certain degree program, trying to coerce them is not going to work. You also cannot call the school to suggest the major they should pick! Gently encourage them, and provide them with suggestions and possible pathways that they can choose to pursue. It’s important to be flexible with time too. Maybe your child will be more comfortable dabbling in a few different courses during freshmen year and then declaring a major.
  • Helping your child in choosing a major is certainly something that you can do, but you must not be overly pushy. As long as they are pursuing what they love, things will work out.
