Help Kids Choose a Major – Guest Post

Dr. Doug’s Experience

  • When my daughter was in kindergarten, she stated emphatically that she wanted to make cartoons. Rather than try to talk her out of it, I did what I could to support her stated interests. Somehow, I had the vision to support whatever she wanted to do rather than push her into something that I liked or something that seemed like a smarter bet in terms of future employment. Even though I had been an educator for 25 years prior to her birth, I was ill prepared to support a budding artist. This meant that I had some homework to do. I did my best to get smart about art schools and how to prepare a child to compete for entry to top schools. My daughter was accepted to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY with a maximum merit scholarship. She got a job right out of school in 2006 and has worked ever since as an animator in New York City. Many majors lend themselves to internships, which are more abundant if you go to school in a big city. Good luck.
