Improving Your School One Week at a Time – Jeffrey Zoul

Jeff Takes on Homework

  • In a nutshell, Jeff endorses small, meaningful, amounts of homework that have a clearly identified purpose and that are commented on in some manner by teachers. If you assign it for practice it should be familiar material so students don’t reinforce errors and misconceptions. He sites studies that suggest that parent involvement may have minimal or negative results. (Doug: Note the use of the word may. I’m sure skilled parents can have a positive impact. I would also note that some research shows that homework is largely ineffective. See my summary ofThe Homework Myth by Alfie Kohn http://www.alfiekohn.org/books/hm.htm )
