The Gamer Generation by Jennifer Wagner

Educational Value of Video Game Creation

  • Students pick up concepts easier and retain more information when they are hands-on with their subject matter. Building games (not just playing them) teaches computer science concepts, logic, and algorithmic thinking. Creating a game is like creating a learning environment for others. In a sense is it like teaching, and as all teachers know, the best way to really learn something is to teach it to others. In this chapter, Jennifer discusses many programming worlds students can use to create their own games. They can also enter game of the month contests.
