The Tiger Slam
- In 2000, Tiger Woods won the US Open, the Open Championship (aka The British Open), and the PGA. In 2001 he won the Masters for four in a row. Ben Hogan won The Masters, The US Open, and The Open Championship in 1953, but could not compete in the PGA due to the near concurrent schedule and trans-atlantic travel at the time. It wasn’t until 1960 that the current slam was conceived when Arnold Palmer won The Masters and the US Open and a member of the press suggested that adding The Open Championship and the PGA would produce a grand slam. The Bobby Jones 1930 grand slam included two amateur tournaments, as there weren’t four professional majors at the time. It is still considered the only grand slam in golf, but it’s really apples and oranges. There is a possibility for a women’s grand slam this year as Inbee Park has won the first three majors. Ironically, women’s golf has five majors so if she wins four in a row that won’t get it done for some folks.
